The parts of a roof, explained

Every one of these works together as a system. Skip or cheap-out on any single part and the whole roof suffers — which is why how a roof is installed matters as much as the shingle brand on the box.

1Shingles (the field)

The visible weather layer that sheds rain, wind, and UV. Architectural (dimensional) shingles last 25–30 years and resist wind far better than old 3-tab. It's what most people picture as “the roof” — but it's only the top of a whole system.

2Underlayment

A synthetic moisture barrier rolled over the entire deck, beneath the shingles. It's the second line of defense if wind-driven rain sneaks past a shingle. We use synthetic underlayment — tougher than old felt and it won't wrinkle or tear.

3Ice & Water Shield

A self-adhering rubberized membrane at the eaves, valleys, and around penetrations. It seals tight around every nail and stops the ice-dam backups that cause winter leaks in the Lehigh Valley. It's code-critical at the eaves — we never skip it.

4Roof Deck (Sheathing)

The plywood or OSB base nailed to the framing — everything else fastens to it. On a tear-off we inspect the deck and replace any soft or rotted sections before new roofing goes on. A great roof over a bad deck won't last.

5Rafters & Trusses

The structural framing that carries the whole roof. We don't just cover problems — if we find sagging or damaged framing during an inspection, we tell you and address it, so your new roof sits on a sound structure.

6Ridge Vent

Runs along the peak and lets hot, moist attic air escape. Paired with soffit intake vents it keeps the attic balanced — preventing ice dams in winter, heat buildup in summer, and premature shingle aging. We size ventilation to your roof, not one-size-fits-all.

7Ridge Cap

Purpose-made shingles bent to cap the peak and hips where slopes meet — the most weather-exposed line on your roof. Cheap 3-tab caps crack and blow off; we use matched ridge-cap shingles built for that job.

8Flashing

Metal that seals the joints water loves most — around chimneys, walls, skylights, and in valleys. Most leaks aren't the shingles; they're failed or missing flashing. We hand-form and properly integrate flashing so those trouble spots stay watertight.

9Drip Edge

Metal edging at the eaves and rakes that directs water off the deck and into the gutter — not behind it, where it rots the fascia. It's code-required, and we install it correctly at every edge.

10Starter Strip

A sealed first course at the eaves and rakes that locks down the edges where wind tries to lift shingles. Skipping it (or faking it with cut field shingles) is a common corner-cut that leads to blow-offs.

11Gutters

Channel roof runoff away from your foundation. Properly pitched and sized gutters protect not just the roof edge but your siding, landscaping, and basement.

12Fascia

The board along the eave that the gutter mounts to and caps the rafter ends. Rotted fascia usually means water got past the drip edge or gutter — we repair or replace it as part of a roof job.

13Soffit

The underside of the overhang. Vented soffit is the intake half of attic ventilation — fresh air in at the eaves, hot air out at the ridge. Blocked soffit vents are a hidden cause of hot attics and early shingle failure.

What are the layers of a roof, from bottom to top?

Framing (rafters or trusses) → roof deck (plywood/OSB) → ice & water shield at the eaves and valleys → synthetic underlayment across the deck → starter strip at the edges → field shingles → ridge cap at the peak. Flashing seals the joints, and drip edge, gutters, fascia, and soffit finish the edges.

What is the most important part of a roof?

There isn’t one — it’s a system. That said, the parts that quietly prevent leaks are often overlooked: flashing, ice & water shield, and proper attic ventilation. Most leaks trace back to flashing, not the shingles.

Why does attic ventilation matter?

Balanced intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge vent) keep your attic cool and dry. Without it you get ice dams in winter, heat and moisture buildup in summer, and shingles that age out years early.

Does the quality of installation really matter that much?

Yes. Two roofs with the same shingles can perform completely differently. Proper flashing, starter strips, drip edge, nailing patterns, and ventilation are what separate a roof that lasts its full life from one that leaks early. That’s the part we obsess over.
